Borrowell is unable to place a fraud alert on your behalf for security reasons. To set up an alert, you will need to contact Equifax Canada directly. Here’s how you can do that:
Steps to Place a Fraud Alert with Equifax
- Call Equifax: You can reach Equifax Canada at 1-866-828-5961 to request a fraud alert.
- Online Option: Alternatively, you can place a fraud alert online by visiting the Equifax Canada website and following their instructions.
- Mail Option: Click here to access the alert form, which can be downloaded, filled in, and mailed.
Types of Fraud Alerts
Equifax offers three types of fraud alerts:
- Identity Alert: With an Identity Alert, you can choose to add a personal statement and phone number (mandatory) to your Equifax credit report. An Identity Alert stays on your Equifax credit report for six years, unless you request in writing that it be removed.
- Fraud Warning: The main difference between an Identity Alert and a Fraud Warning is that a Fraud Warning is only available to confirmed victims of fraud/identity theft. This special statement added to your credit report will also include a phone number to encourage (but not legally require) lenders to call you before extending credit. Fraud Warnings are free, and stay on your Equifax credit report for six years.
- Credit Report Lock (Quebec Residents Only): All Quebec residents will have the right to lock or unlock their Equifax credit reports. A credit lock is a feature that helps Quebec residents prevent lenders and other businesses from opening new or additional credit accounts in their name.
Placing an alert helps protect your credit by requiring creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before extending credit in your name.
