To change or dispute information on your credit report, follow these steps:
- Contact the lender or agency that reported the information:
- Explain what you believe is incorrect
- Ask them to verify and update their records if needed
- If the lender confirms the information is accurate, file a dispute directly with Equifax:
- Call Equifax at 1-866-828-5961
- Or file a dispute online through your myEquifax account
- To file a dispute with Equifax online:
- Create or sign into your myEquifax account
- Go to the dispute center and click "File a Dispute"
- Select the item you want to dispute
- Provide details about why you believe the information is inaccurate
- Upload any supporting documents
- Equifax will investigate your dispute:
- They may contact the company that reported the information
- Most investigations are completed within 30 days
- You'll receive notification of the results
- If the investigation doesn't resolve the issue:
- You can add a brief statement to your credit file explaining your side of the dispute
- This statement will be included when your credit file is accessed
